Eagles Soar Again: Estancia Captures Second CIF Title
Estancia's baseball team brings the drama whenever it plays at Cal State Fullerton. Saturday was no exception. Trailing by two runs in the bottom of the seventh, Jake Humphries launched a three-run double to give the Eagles a 4-3 comeback win over Marshall in the CIF Southern Section Division 6 final.
The victory gives Estancia its second CIF championship in four years. Humphries, who was a bench player during the Eagles' 2022 title run, delivered when his team needed him most. "It's the only way we know how to play baseball," Coach Nate Goellrich told the Orange County Register. "You can never count us out."
This championship carries special meaning for Goellrich, who has built something rare in high school sports—sustained excellence with homegrown talent. "We've got the private schools around us that try to take our best players, and we've got the public schools that act like private schools that try to take our best players," he told the Daily Pilot. "I want people that want to be here. These guys are here and we work hard with what we've got."
The Eagles proved that formula works. After a brutal 15-3 season-opening loss to Woodbridge that Goellrich called "ugly, putting it nicely," this team chose the harder path. They stayed together, worked harder, and found their identity in moments when others might have folded. By season's end, they had turned a slow start into another championship banner. "If you don't want to win CIF championships, then don't come to Estancia, right?" Goellrich said.
In Costa Mesa, that's not just coach speak—it's a proven track record.
